Governor Alfredo Cornejo met with executives from Teck Resources, a Canadian mining company focused on copper, zinc, and other critical metals essential to the energy transition.
The meeting was also attended by Minister of Energy and Environment Jimena Latorre; Director of Mining Jerónimo Shantal; Teck Resources Exploration Manager Andrés Castillo; Government Relations representative Giovanna Beratto; and legal representatives Gastón Vargas and Jorge Vargas.
The company’s visit to Mendoza builds on the work the Province has been carrying out to position Mendoza as a reliable destination for sustainable mining investment, promoting projects aligned with international environmental, social, and governance standards.
During the meeting, Teck Resources representatives highlighted Mendoza’s geological potential and expressed their interest in pursuing large-scale investments in the province. The parties also discussed several areas of interest for mineral exploration and the development of future mining projects.
Company executives also shared positive results from Teck’s experience in neighboring San Juan Province, where it has been conducting activities for the past three years, and expressed satisfaction with the work carried out there.
Latorre, meanwhile, outlined the procedures and approval stages that mining projects must undergo in Mendoza, including review by the Provincial Legislature, in accordance with current regulations.
A Relationship Built Through International Mining Events
In March, during the 2026 Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention in Toronto, Latorre held a working meeting with Sam Roffey, Teck Resources’ Director of Exploration for the Americas. The discussion focused on Mendoza’s geological potential, the investment environment, and prospects for developing copper projects in the province.
The agenda continued in April during CESCO Week in Santiago, Chile, where Governor Alfredo Cornejo met with company executives, including Stuart McCracken, Vice President of Exploration; Sam Roffey, Director of Exploration; and members of Teck’s global technical team.
At that meeting, the company expressed its interest in moving toward concrete projects in Mendoza, continuing an institutional and technical relationship that has now been strengthened by the visit of Teck representatives to the province.
Infrastructure and Regional Integration
The latest meeting also addressed opportunities for cooperation on power infrastructure and the importance of strengthening energy connections between Mendoza and northern Argentina as part of a broader integration and energy development agenda.
In this context, Cornejo highlighted Mendoza’s connections with Chile and the regional integration agenda, in line with issues recently discussed during his meeting with the Chilean ambassador to Argentina. Teck Resources representatives were also invited to participate in a new round of discussions scheduled for November.
The parties also discussed the bilateral energy agreement between Argentina and Chile, which remains part of the ongoing agenda, although further progress will largely depend on the needs and decisions of the companies involved.
Teck Resources currently focuses its operations on copper, zinc, and other critical metals used in electrification, renewable energy, power transmission networks, electric vehicles, and technology infrastructure. After divesting its steelmaking coal business in 2024, the company shifted its strategy toward expanding its portfolio of minerals considered essential to the global energy transition.
