What is MDMO?
The Malargüe Distrito Minero Occidental (or Malargüe Western Mining District) is a tool developed by the government of the Province of Mendoza through Impulsa Mendoza S.A. It was created to respond to the challenges of the global energy transition.
Impulsa Mendoza S.A. has developed a detailed environmental impact study of the entire MDMO area. This includes studies of geological and infrastructure potential to shorten the time required for the exploration of mining projects.

What are the characteristics of the area?
The district is located near the Andes mountain range, in the south-central sector of the department of Malargüe. It has an area of almost 20,000 km² and 1.9 million ha. Its main access roads are the national routes 40 and 188. The mining attributes located within this area represent 37.5% of the district’s total surface area (703,000 ha).
The geological potential of MDMO
The studies determined that the region is very suitable for mining development, since it has enormous geological potential and there is no competition for the use of land or water with any other productive activity. On the contrary, the mining industry complements perfectly with other existing activities in the area, such as tourism and livestock farming.
The world requires a revolutionary transformation in the way energy is produced and consumed. In the area of the Malargüe Mining District, there is potential to explore copper, one of the critical minerals for the energy transition. Copper is essential to develop renewable energy technologies that will enable the reduction of carbon emissions globally.
