The El Perdido project became the first initiative within the Malargüe Distrito Minero Occidental to begin drilling activities. The milestone marks a new phase for copper development in Mendoza and consolidates a model based on technical planning, international investment, and the participation of local talent.
Developed by Kobrea Exploraciones Argentina, the El Perdido project is the first within the Malargüe Distrito Minero Occidental to enter the drilling stage. This advancement represents a turning point for metal exploration in Mendoza and signals the beginning of a new chapter for the province’s mining sector.
The start of drilling is the result of more than a year of technical, administrative, and territorial work. Throughout this period, the project underwent multiple stages of environmental, water, heritage, cultural, and social evaluation, in addition to securing the required authorizations from the Municipality of Malargüe and the provincial mining authority.
Company representatives emphasized that the launch of drilling operations represents not only a technical achievement but also a significant shift for mining in Mendoza. Kobrea is the first foreign-capital company to initiate this type of activity in the province after several years, opening a new cycle of investment, geological data generation, and productive development.
Kobrea Exploraciones Argentina is a corporation wholly owned by Kobrea Explorations Corp, a Canada-based mining company. The firm selected Mendoza as its first investment destination in Argentina and has concentrated all of its projects in the Malargüe department, where it identified strong geological potential for copper systems.
To access the drilling site, the company built an approximately 15-kilometer access road, with the corresponding authorizations from both the surface landowner and the provincial mining authority. Although the area’s geographic and climatic conditions posed logistical challenges that extended initial timelines, equipment is now fully installed on site and drilling has formally commenced.
The Strategic Potential of the Malargüe Distrito Minero Occidental
In parallel, Kobrea continues advancing technical and environmental studies on other projects in Malargüe, including El Destino, as well as additional exploration areas under its control. The company stated that it has the logistical capacity, human resources, and financial backing to develop multiple projects simultaneously, subject to the permits granted by regulatory authorities.
The launch of this drilling campaign strengthens the positioning of the Malargüe Distrito Minero Occidental—an initiative promoted by Impulsa Mendoza—as a strategic platform for the exploration of critical minerals such as copper. It also reinforces Mendoza’s role as an attractive destination for investments that combine economic development, rigorous technical standards, and sustainability criteria.
Technical Background
As part of the preliminary exploration stages, Kobrea completed its first geophysical campaign at the El Perdido property in June of this year. The program was carried out by the Mendoza-based company Geoenergía, using state-of-the-art technology, specialized personnel, and entirely local logistics.
The campaign stood out for the quality of the data obtained and for an efficient aerial operation that met technical objectives under demanding geographic conditions. Activities were supported by the Los Molles airstrip, authorized as a Declared Suitable Landing Site by Argentina’s National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC), which is increasingly recognized as strategic infrastructure for mining, health, tourism, and logistics operations in southern Mendoza.
This geophysical stage was key to defining the priority targets now being evaluated through drilling, consolidating an exploration approach based on careful planning, high-quality technical information, and the use of local expertise.
